4. TITLE: Image processing of terahearz 3D images for industrial component inspection
DESCRIPTION: The research in terahertz radiation and applications is quite recent: it was set about 15 years ago but rapidly led to new solutions, targeting unsolved problems in the fields of security, manufacturing, medical diagnostics but also spectroscopy, astronomy and telecommunications. As a matter of fact, most of such applications rely on new flavors of image processing and artificial vision, which need to be specifically customized to cope with THz-image features, especially for composite materials. The aim of the thesis is to develop algorithms to detect and align 3D shapes from terahertz tomographies with the corresponding CAD model. Many different image processing techniques (i.e. edge detection, noise reduction, pattern matching) will be involved in this work as to obtain an accurate system for further development.
Type: 4-6 months. Stage at ISMB, Istituto Superiore Mario Boella, Torino.

7. TITOLO: Distributed Frequency Agility in Cognitive Radio for WPANs
DURATA: 6-9 months
PROFILO DEL CANDIDATO:
- Good knowledge of C/C++, Java programming languages
- Familiarity with wireless technologies, networking and simulation tools
DESCRIZIONE DELLA TESI:
Motivation: The performance of Wireless communications can be significantly degraded in the presence of RF interference. Spectrum awareness and dynamic frequency allocation allow efficient spectrum usage and increased communication reliability, by constantly monitoring the state of the available channels and reallocating to the best available one in case interference is present in the operating channel. However, current solutions lack in supporting large scale networks in terms of distributing the management task among the nodes in the network and managing different RF conditions over the same large scale network.
Objectives: The goal of this thesis is to develop a distributed and cooperative spectrum management algorithm, and the definition of adaptability and re-configurability techniques that optimize a given set of system parameters, for example packet loss rate, data throughput, workload and energy.

10. TITOLO: Experiments on iTetris platform for VANET simulation
TIPOLOGIA TESI: tesi per laurea di secondo livello (laurea magistrale).
DURATA: 6 mesi full time
PROFILO DEL CANDIDATO: C/C++ programming skills.
DESCRIZIONE DELLA TESI: iTetris is an open-source software, developed within a project founded by European community, integrating wireless communications and road traffic simulation platforms. In general, VANET simulations (done with NS3 network simulator) start from a traffic trace previously created by a mobility generator (e.g. SUMO). iTetris allows to introduce a feedback from network simulation to the mobility engine, in order to modify mobility depending on information sent on the network.
This thesis is meant to implement and simulate protocols to manage traffic with a centralized coordination system, mainly focused on parking assistance.

11. TITOLO: Visualization Techniques for VANET
TIPOLOGIA TESI: tesi per laurea di secondo livello (laurea magistrale).
DURATA: 6 mesi full time
PROFILO DEL CANDIDATO: Java programming skills and background in WiFi networking
DESCRIZIONE DELLA TESI: VANETs are a hot scientific topic and, due to the lack of large field trials, most of VANETs features are being studied by simulations. Consequently performances are studied through performance figures, which are often too synthetic to enable a deep understanding of phenomena. For this reason Visualization tools are being proposed to facilitate the analysis of results from simulation.
The work of this thesis foresees the enrichment of a tool (VIS MAGNA) developed by ISMB in Java. Currently the tool targets the comparative analysis between CSMA/CA and MS-Aloha (a proprietary synchronous MAC). Based on the available results from Politecnico and ISMB, the tool will be enriched with new features to show additional metrics through animations.

14. TITOLO: Study of weighted leaderless synchronization algorithms for wireless nodes
TIPOLOGIA TESI: tesi per laurea di secondo livello (laurea magistrale).
DURATA: 6 mesi full time
PROFILO DEL CANDIDATO:
C/C++ programming
Matlab
Background in wireless communications
DESCRIZIONE DELLA TESI: Synchronization is a critical enabler for several communication techniques. In most cases it is achieved by means of an external common source (such as GPS) or by distribution techniques (clock trees). Unfortunately they do not apply to wireless indoor nodes. Leaderless synchronization are meant to cope with this problem and proposes to achieve synchronization in a distributed way, by consensus techniques. Literature on leaderless synchronization has not explored yet solutions where the nodes can be assigned different weights for the consensus algorithms: this corresponds to the situation where different nodes can provide distinct clock stability and, consequently, are expected to be preferable to drive consensus.
The thesis will study this problem through Matlab and NS-2.
