Developing a Recommender System for Tourist Packages

• Experience with Python and/or Java
• Basic notion of data semantics, artificial intelligence, data mining
• Strong interest in intelligent recommender systems
• Basic English level
We believe that the future of tourism can be better assisted by automated systems able to tailor tourist packages according to user’s needs and preferences. At the frontier of machine learning, data semantics, and knowledge base population, the student will study the adaptive user profiling research line and prototype solutions to match local tourist offerings to user profiles. The goal of the thesis will be then two-fold: - conduct a survey of technologies enabling to implement adaptive user profiling - formalize the set of variables that define a user profile and investigate the role of explicit user feedback - develop an adaptive prototype that generates tourist offerings matching user preferences The student will touch real data and work in an international context of a European project. The student will have the possibility to learn under a joint supervision of researchers from ISMB, Politecnico di Torino and EURECOM (there is the possibility to do the thesis abroad if this is planned by your MSc programme). It’s a great occasion to get into the research mindset with a strong push for the innovation.
