L’ingegnere Maurizio A. Spirito ha ricevuto laurea in Ingegneria Elettronica nel 1996 ed il dottorato di ricerca in Ingegneria Elettronica e delle Telecomunicazioni nel 1999, entrambi dal Politecnico di Torino.

Dall'ottobre 1998 all'ottobre 2003 è stato Senior Research Engineer e Project Manager al Nokia Research Center di Helsinki (Finlandia). Opera in ISMB dal novembre 2003, dove è stato prima responsabile del Laboratorio di Tecnologie Radiomobili per la Multimedialità e successivamente responsabile dell’Area di Ricerca Pervasive Technologies (PerT). Da luglio 2013 è responsabile della Funzione Emerging Trends and Opportunities.

L’ingegnere Spirito ha una vasta esperienza nello sviluppo e nella gestione di progetti di ricerca e sviluppo in ambito internazionale e multiculturale, in particolare nell’ambito dell’Internet degli oggetti (Internet of Things). Nel corso degli anni ha acquisito una notevole esperienza nel contesto dei Programmi Quadro (PQ) di ricerca finanziati dalla Commissione europea, partecipando e coordinando i contributi di ISMB ai progetti CVIS e SAFESPOT (progetti integrati del 6° PQ), NEWCOM (rete di eccellenza del 6° PQ), NEWCOM++ (rete di eccellenza del 7° PQ), ebbits e BUTLER (progetti integrati del 7° PQ), SEEMPubS (STREP del 7° PQ) BEMO-COFRA e IMPRESS (STREP del 7° PQ per la collaborazione tra EU e Brasile). L’ingegnere Spirito è anche stato coinvolto in numerosi progetti finanziati dalla Regione Piemonte o in collaborazioni industriali con grandi aziende quali Telecom Italia, STMicroelectronics, SKF, COMAU e numerose piccole-medie imprese piemontesi.

L’ingegnere Spirito è il coordinatore di due progetti STREP del 7° PQ di particolare rilevanza per i programmi strategici Smart Energy e Smart City di ISMB; in particolare: GreenCom – sulle micro-reti elettriche intelligenti – ed ALMANAC – che coinvolge, tra gli altri partner, Torino Smart City.

I suoi interessi di ricerca riguardano numerosi temi nel campo dell’Internet degli oggetti. Le applicazioni all’efficienza energetica, alle reti elettriche smart, alle smart city, ai processi industriali ed alla tracciabilità alimentare. Le tecnologie delle reti di sensori wireless, le comunicazioni wireless pervasive flessibili e sicure, la localizzazione cooperativa ed ibrida, le architetture orientate ai servizi per l’Internet degli oggetti. Maurizio Spirito è coautore di due capitoli di libri, più di settanta articoli pubblicati su riviste scientifiche e conferenze internazionali, così come tredici tra brevetti e domande di brevetto.

Dr. Maurizio A. Spirito received the MSc degree in Electronics Engineering in 1996 and the PhD in Electronics and Telecommunications Engineering in 1999, both from Politecnico di Torino (Italy).

From October 1998 to October 2003 he has been with the Nokia Research Center in Helsinki (Finland) as a Senior Research Engineer and Project Manager. He joined ISMB in November 2003, where he was first Head of the Radio Technologies for Multimedia Lab, then Head of the Pervasive Technologies (PerT) Research Area. Since July 2013 he is in charge of the Emerging Trends and Opportunity Function.

Dr. Spirito has an extensive experience in developing and managing international multicultural research and development projects, especially in the area of Internet of Things (IoT). Along the years he has gained a very solid experience in the context of the European Commission Framework Programs (FP) for research and development, participating and coordinating ISMB contributions to the following projects: CVIS and SAFESPOT (FP6 Integrated Projects), NEWCOM (FP6 Network of Excellence), NEWCOM++ (FP7 Network of Excellence), ebbits and BUTLER (FP7 Integrated Projects), SEEMPubS (FP7 STREP), BEMO-COFRA and IMPRESS (FP7 STREPs for EU-Brazil collaboration). He has also been involved in projects co-funded by the Piedmont Region and in industrial collaborations with large companies such as Telecom Italia, STMicroelectronics, SKF, COMAU and numerous small-medium enterprises from Piedmont.

Dr. Spirito is coordinator of two FP7 STREP projects that are key for the Smart Energy and Smart City strategic programs of ISMB, namely: GreenCom - on smart electric energy micro-grids - and ALMANAC - involving, among other partners, Torino Smart City.

His research interests cover a number of topics in the area of the Internet of Things. Applications for energy efficiency, smart grids, smart cities, industrial processes and food traceability. Technologies for wireless sensor networks, flexible, secure and pervasive networking and communications, hybrid cooperative GNSS-terrestrial navigation, Service Oriented Architectures for the Internet of Things. Dr. Spirito has (co-)authored two book chapters, more than seventy papers in peer-reviewed scientific journals and international conferences, as well as thirteen among patents and patent applications.
