BELS Project: one day workshops in Indonesia, The Philippines and Laos

22 April 2016

BELS - Building European Links toward South-East Asia in the field of EGNSS – project, coordinated by the Navigation Technologies Research Area, carried on a round of one-day workshops in South East Asia aiming to promote the European GNSS technology - EGNSS. The workshops, during which the BELS team established new links while local GNSS stakeholders and researchers were put in contact with the European GNSS environment, were a real success with more than 200 participants among local GNSS communities.

The first three workshops took place in:
Bandung (Indonesia), 18th April 2016
Manila (The Philippines), 20th April 2016
Vientiane (Laos), 22nd April 2016

The BELS workshops presented the status of satellite navigation technology and the project’s activities in South East Asia and in Europe.
In particular:
• European and Asian researchers provided a short overview on the available Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) and on the most promising applications, with a focus on South East Asian needs and on the European system Galileo
• Local researchers introduced the national GNSS experience
• European GNSS companies involved in BELS presented their activities
• The NAVIS Centre in Vietnam presented its most important research products

BELS activities span a 3-year period (2015-2018) in which the Galileo constellation is expected to reach its IOC Phase and to move forward towards the final full configuration: these years will be fundamental to pave the way for the introduction of Galileo services in SEA, both for European companies that can enter a new growing market and for the South East Asian countries that can discover the potentialities of the EGNSS technology.
The project is led by Istituto Superiore Mario Boella with partners from various European Union countries, from South East Asia and Australia.
