First In-Field Validation of FLOODIS Project

26 June 2015

From 30 June to 2 July 2015, Claudio Rossi and Vito Macchia from the Mobile Solutions Area will be in Albania to perform the first in-field validation of FLOODIS, which is a collaborative European Community project coordinated by ISMB, and funded under the Seventh Framework Programme, aimed at providing a flood information service that enhance flood management and alerting. It focuses on the integration of satellite navigation technologies (E-GNSS), earth observation (Copernicus EMS) and real-time warnings provided by citizens and civil protection operators through the mobile sensing paradigm.

Starting from historical data, a flood will be simulated in the Shkoder area, which has been prone to floods in the past. It will be allowed to use the FLOODIS system in order to visualize detailed flood inundation maps coming satellite systems, as well as from the novel flood nowcast and forecast models of FLOODIS, taking into account user flood reports that will be generated in real-time.
Together with the FLOODIS consortium, also the Albanian Civil Protection and the Albanian Red Cross will take part in the demonstration as main end-users. At the end of the event, feedbacks on how to improve the FLOODIS system will be collected by end-users under the supervision of UNESCO.
