Second Intermediate Management Meeting of the SnowBall Project

2 March 2015

On the 3rd and the 4th March the Fraunhofer Institute for High-Speed Dynamics, Ernst-Mach-Institut (EMI) in Freiburg (Germany) will host the intermediate management meeting of the SnowBall project, to discuss the work progress and coordinate the current and future tasks. This is the second meeting involving all partners after the one which took place in Naples on 30th September and 1st October 2014.

SnowBall - Lower the impact of aggravating factors in crisis situations thanks to adaptive foresight and decision-support tools is a research project partially funded by FP7 program under the topic SEC-2013.4.1-2. The project’s overall objective is to increase preparedness and response capacities of decision-makers, emergency planners and first responders in respect to amplifying hazards in large disasters. To satisfy these needs, the project aims at the development of methods and algorithms capable of anticipating cascading effects based on previous simulations. A Decision Support System (DSS) will be implemented, to monitor an ongoing disaster and to help decision makers defining an appropriate strategy to limit the damages.

Within the project ISMB will maily contribute to:
• build a cloud-based computing infrastructure to support DSS tools;
• supervise data collection and develop the data layer to enable the integration of data from all formats;
• develop solutions that, by using data from social networks and mobile terminals of rescue forces, may be helpful during crisis management operations;
• take care of the Crisis management Dashboard, by developing the decision algorithm at the root of the DSS through adequate modeling techniques.

ISMB will be represented by: Antonio Attanasio (researcher at Advanced Computing and Electromagnetics Area), Antonio Lotito (head of Mobile and Usability Unit) and Michele Osella (head of Business Model and Policy Innovation Unit).
