The research unit i-Bio (Informatics for Biology) aims the creation of information technologies for biological and medical research with open source approach. The i-Bio Research Center will develop the first national and regional platform of "Open Source Drug Discovery". The RC i-Bio aims to become a national and European center of excellence about project management technologies for medical research and analysis of biomedical data such as genomic, transcriptomic and proteomic data.

The RC i-Bio consists of a Cloud unit and a Care Unit, each with its own research project. BioDigitalValley and Istituto Superiore Mario Boella (ISMB) work on activities related to Cloud computing technology, throught the Cloud Unit. BioDigitalValley and Consorzio Interuniversitario Nazionale per l’informatica (CINI) work on network analysis, through the Care Unit. The Cloud Unit researchers team develops a cloud computing platform, Open Source Drug Discovery (OSDD), instead Care Unit implements software programs for data analysis produced by Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) using sequence alignment techniques and Gene Enrichment Analysis (GEA). The software tools created by the Care Unit will be integrated in the OSDD.
