ISMB at M2M Forum 2013

Has been scheduled for May 14 the twelfth edition of M2M Forum, considered the most important event for the world of machines to machines (M2M) communication and, since few years, the main Italian event dedicated to the emerging Internet of Things.

Many high-level conferences has been planned – including case studies and experiences on M2M solutions in various application fields – as rich as the program of exclusive business matching activities, which encourages the dialogue between international business experts and the community of M2M operator.

Among the issues dealt within the M2M Forum 2013 there is the Smart Grid, which includes the issues of Smart Metering (theme that sees Italy first ranked in Europe regarding the introduction and usage of electricity and gas digital meter). It also includes all the solutions dedicated to M2M remote monitoring and remote management of green infrastructures for energy micro-generation/co-generation, such as Distribution and Energy Storage.

Within this context, Maurizio Spirito, Head of PerT (Pervasive Technologies) Research Area, presented the ISMB Institute and the activities carried out in the FP7 European Project GreenCom, through a speech entitled " Energy Management of microgrids in a Smart City environment". The speech will provide a description of how an M2M based platform for energy efficiency will allow energy providers to dynamically monitor and balance the energy network load. Indeed, one possible solution is to adopt demand-response mechanisms, exploiting storage systems and electric power generation from renewable sources, in order to improve the stability of the distribution network and to optimize the overall power consumption. The presented approach introduces new technological challenges but also new opportunities for a more efficient energy management in the future Smart City. M2M Forum aside from examining the increasing importance assumed by the Internet of Things, focuses on M2M Cloud, devoting space to the first achievements of the so-called M2M Cloud of Things and to Big Data.
