Autonomous WSN for predictive maintenance


The project is characterized by the study of the state of the art, a critical feasibility evaluation and a preliminary design regarding hypothetical design and manufacture of mechanical equipment for trains that can wirelessly communicate several variables such as temperature and vibration in order to implement strategies for condition based maintenance/monitoring.

The project involves three main research themes:

  1. study of an antenna with rigid dimensional constraints in relation to the actual train components mechanical position,
  2. study and evaluation of the low energy wireless communication architecture and protocols to be used for the bearings monitoring on a passenger train, and
  3. study and analysis of energy harvesting and scavenging solutions applied to the specific scenario of the bearings mounted on the wagons axles composing the train.
